What's News is New Again: Tech Innovation in News Media Companies
Presenters discuss the changes in the news media industry and how news content is distributed.
Joe Michaud: Newspapers and online – remaking the model. Following many years of experimentation, newspapers are beginning to rethink the role of online in their businesses. From a position "downstream" of print news and advertising, online increasingly is being integrated into newspapers' routines, though clearly with unique challenges and opportunities. Still, for an industry built on historically high ad prices and healthy revenues, 15 years of online disruption have taken their toll. Will newspapers be able to reinvent themselves as smaller, nimbler organizations, and thrive in new market realities? Part of the answer is a total rethinking of the technology and systems at the heart of newspaper operations.
Eric Kaiser: These are challenging times for newspapers. Often during challenging times comes innovation and opportunity. This session will focus on business objectives for newspapers that want to redefine themselves as profitable media companies. The focus of the discussion will be on the "Big Three" issues of: video, email marketing and mobile applications. There will be additional discussion of newspaper print verticals and online tie-ins as well as revenue generating online content.
Adam Kempler: Technology solutions for new media models. Celsius provides specific solutions for some of the more abstract media “best practices” currently being discussed: practices that address the technological solutions for changes facing the entire news industry. Adam will discuss aspects of these solutions including current trends such as open APIs, shared content repositories, and other current "technological directions."
