The Data Planner will design and maintain a robust data / broadband network.  These networks will include management, voice, data and signaling networks. Performs job duties consistent within safety, legal, and regulatory requirements; company standards, culture and business practices.  Acts with the highest level of business and personal ethical standards in all aspects of job performance.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop detailed network and POP designs, optimizing existing network designs; documenting standards and training other team members
  • Project management, evaluation of new technologies to support and enhance core network functionality; Developing test plans and analyzing test results; Writing method of procedure documents;
  • Partner with marketing department to develop new service; Monitoring and Support of current network; Provide Tier 1-3+ tech support to Network Operations Center; On-call support;
  • Design, implement and manage engineering on multiple network element systems: Packet-mode/soft switches; Data/IP systems including Cisco/Juniper routers and switches, TDM and Ethernet based transport systems; and broadband access network elements (Metro-Ethernet, DSL, FTTH, NG/BDLC, etc.)

Additional Duties:

  • Interact with other departments/functions in identification and resolution of network troubles as well as assisting in setting standards and policies to avoid future problems
  • Meet Networking Engineering objectives and goals in relation to customer service objectives, service level agreements, and regulatory obligations
  • Assist in supporting 7x24 hour manager on-call requirements
  • Contributes to departmental activities and programs by accomplishing related tasks as needed.
  • The Switch Engineer reports to the Sr. Manager – Engineering & Planning.  They work closely with other network engineering and network operations groups, and local operations OSP engineering personnel. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Application of the listed technologies for an ISP environment is a plus
  • Advanced certifications such as CCNP, CCIE, JNCIP and JNCIE a plus; Intimate understanding of IP routing protocols including BGP, OSPF and ISIS
  • Good understanding of MPLS, LDP and RSVP; VPN technologies such as MPLS and IPSEC
  • Good understanding of layer 2 technologies specifically Ethernet, Frame Relay, ATM, PPP and SONET
  • Familiarity with the Tx (T1, T3 etc.,), the OCx (OC3, OC12 etc.,) carrier system and its operation and troubleshooting; as related to an ISP a plus
  • Basic understanding of VoIP including session border controllers and media gateways and their signaling types such as SIP, H323 and MGC
  • Basic understanding of QoS, Packet Capturing and Analysis and Firewalls
  • Understanding of advanced technologies such as L2VPN, VPLS, IPV6 and Multicast a plus
  • Advanced Windows/Linux/Unix System skills; Understanding of advanced operating system functions such as shell scripting and databases a plus
  • Basic understanding of network management technologies such as SYSLOG and SNMP
  • Understanding or experience with network management applications such as Tivoli Netcool, Harris and MRTG/RRD tool a plus.
  • Advanced understanding of various Cisco and/or Juniper hardware a plus
  • Hands on experience with Cisco12000GSR, 7500, 7600, Juniper M-series, ERX series and Cisco Integrated Services Routers a plus
  • Hands on experience with Cisco PIX/ASA, Cisco FWSM/IDS a plus
  • Hands on experience with Cisco 4500/6500 Series and other Cisco Catalyst switches a plus
  • Basic understand of AC and DC power in relation to installation of any of routing and switching systems
  • Experience with other Layer 2 and Layer 3 equipment providers

Required Education & Experience:

  • In order to accomplish the essential duties of this position, the incumbent must have a Bachelor’s degree or related, equivalent experience.
  • Five (5) years Data/IP, Switch and transport experience. 
  • Switch Routing and Translations experience.
  • Data provisioning and routing of SMS database & SCP database services
  • Must have and display interpersonal, problem solving and conflict resolution skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and ability to perform in a rapidly changing environment
  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
